Company History

During his residency, Dr. Jeffrey Port, a professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, faced numerous OR cases where sponge counts were incorrect. He witnessed the frustrating, costly and time-consuming events that followed as staff worked to locate missing sponges and reconcile surgical counts. This firsthand understanding of the problems and risks inherent in tracking surgical disposables inspired RF Assure® Detection Technology.

Over the next decade, Dr. Port and Co-Founder William Blair, an accomplished principal engineer, worked together to develop the RF Assure® Detection System. Its exceptionally accurate sponge detection capabilities provide a new level of patient safety and surgical team confidence.

Permission to market the RF Assure Detection System was granted by the FDA in 2006. Today, RF Surgical Systems is the market leader in retained surgical sponge detection, with patented systems in more than 4,500 Operating Rooms, Trauma and Labor & Delivery suites nationwide.

RF Surgical Systems maintains a strong commitment to R&D in partnership with leaders in the medical field. We continue to develop new innovations that help health care professionals provide a higher level of patient care.
